How monthly listener rankings work
Updated 5 October 2026 · 2 min read
Rankings are generated by sorting a public number, which sounds trivial and produces several predictable misunderstandings.
A sort, not a score
A ranking orders artists by the same public listener figure that appears on their profile. There is no separate algorithm and no quality weighting. Whoever has the most unique listeners in the rolling window sits on top that day.
Because the window moves daily, positions near each other swap constantly. Treat small gaps as ties.
Why the leaderboard is not a target
Global leaders hold their positions with catalogue depth, collaborations and marketing budgets that independent releases cannot match. The relevant ranking for an independent artist is within a genre or a territory, not globally.
Using rankings for research
Compare a ranking from today with one from six months ago to find artists genuinely ascending in your niche. Then look at what they released and who covered them in that period. Those outlets and curators are your outreach targets, and the method costs nothing. The artist one place above you is a far better benchmark than the artist at number one, because their next move is one you could copy.
Frequently asked questions
Who decides the ranking?
Independent sites that record the public figure, since Spotify does not publish a global ranking of artists by listeners.
Do rankings include all artists?
Most cover the largest artists, because tracking everyone is expensive. Smaller acts appear only in narrower lists.
Can a release move me up a ranking?
Only within your own tier. Rankings above you are separated by audiences of orders of magnitude.
