Monthly listeners not updating: what to check

Updated 5 October 2026 · 2 min read

A listener figure that will not move after a campaign is one of the most common panics in music promotion, and most cases resolve to one of five causes.

Check these in order

Work through them before concluding anything has gone wrong.

  • Reporting delay — the profile figure and Spotify for Artists both lag your latest plays by hours.
  • The window effect — new plays add listeners, but listeners from four weeks ago are simultaneously leaving.
  • Delivery failure — if your outreach never arrived, nothing was played. Check sender reputation and bounces.
  • Wrong link — a pitch that points to a private or region-restricted link produces clicks and no plays.
  • The 30-second rule — plays ending before the threshold build nothing.

Confirm plays happened at all

Look at streams for the specific track you promoted, not the artist total. If streams rose and listeners did not, your new plays came from a small number of people repeating, which adds streams without adding reach.

If neither moved, the plays did not happen. That is a distribution problem, not a metric problem.

The least useful thing to do

Refreshing the profile. The figure recalculates on its own schedule, and watching it does not influence it. Spend the time checking your campaign reports and your sender health instead.

Frequently asked questions

How long until listeners update after a campaign?

The count refreshes continuously but visibly lags. Give a real campaign two weeks before judging it.

Can listeners update but streams not?

Effectively no, because a listener requires a stream. Streams can rise without listeners when the same people replay you.

Should I contact Spotify support?

Not for a reporting delay. Contact your distributor if plays are missing entirely from your reports.
